Haverhill Running Club is made up of 50 or so runners from Haverhill and the surrounding area. A mix of ages (including pensioners) and abilities makes it a great group for all, including beginners, to train with.
Every Thursday, whatever the weather, the Club meets at Haverhill Leisure Centre at 7 p.m. for a Club run of about 6-7 miles. During the Spring and Summer this will be in the beautiful countryside; in Autum and Winter, around the town. There is a group (mainly women - but not exclusively so - that meets at 6.00 p.m. and covers a shorter distance at a slower speed and is ideal for those starting out on the route to fitness.
On Tuesday nights we hold training sessions that include speedwork, hills and tempo runs. During the summer months we hold our Time Trial Series which takes place over a circular 5k route in Haverhill. The 6.00 p.m. group also meets for a slightly longer run but at Thursday speed!
We are very supportive of newcomers as well as helping members with races to train for such as Marathons. Newcomers are welcome and there are lots of experiences runners in the Club who are very willing to help, advise and pass on their experience to anyone wishing to join or who is new to the Club.
Members enter races throughout the year over all distances. Some are prolific racers and others race infrequently. During the year we organise a Grand Prix series made up of selected events around the region. We also compete in a 5k League against other clubs in the area as well as our own in-club 5k Time Trials. We combine with Newmarket Joggers and Sudbury Runners in the Suffolk Winter Cross-Country League.
Recently, we joined the Greater Cambridge Athletic Network, a local partnership of athletics clubs and other sporting bodies in and around Cambridge, set up by England Athletics. It aims to provide excellent services and facilities, for coaches and all levels of athlete in the Greater Cambridge area which are easily accessible and adopt best practice.
At the end of each year the Club holds its Awards evening where the competitions and achievements are recognised and rewarded.
